Spring Still Life

-Rebecca Jessen

a middle-aged man rolls off his banana
lounge at dusk. a white stretch
limo is conspicuous at peak hour. the kerb is dotted
with aging brown couches. the season for collection
has already passed. in the park lorikeets and cockatoos compete
for Australia’s Bird of the Year.
while juvenile brush-turkeys evade
existence in the undergrowth. in the distance
three identical dachshunds on the loose. at nightfall
I mistake incoming Boeings for stars.

Artwork by Caitlin McGregor. Image is a hand drawn illustration on a purple background. In the top left corner is a stained glass window, featuring a mosaic of a Cockatoo and Rosella. On the right side, three silver swords hang on the wall. Beneath them, a man with short black hair and stubble is laying on a yellow banana lounge. He is wearing a lilac shirt and blue jeans, looking peaceful. One more silver sword lays on the ground next to him.
