SUBMISSIONS FOR SUNDER ISSUE 2- TANGLE ARE NOW OPEN!

‘I call to you from a place where bodies slip through hands like loose grain’ — Melanie
Tafejian, Happiness Index.

Image is a collage created by artist Alex Creece. On the right side is a large face with eyes closed, covered in beige netting. Some of the triangles of the netting are filled in with different colourful patterns, giving the feel of a crochet. On the right side are two human figures that look like medical diagrams. One is coloured white and has its veins and vascular system highlighted in black. The other one is black with its nervous system highlighted in white. They are standing on top of scrolls of patterned paper. In the background, beach waves and purple sand are visible. In the centre of the image, wrapping around the face, are collaged letters spelling out 'tangle'.
Tangle – Alex Creece, 2024.

Snarled sleep schedules and knotted knuckles; TANGLE is here and ready for you to bare
your roots. We want to hear about the chaos, the confusion, the communities, and the
curiosities that make us human.

Write to us about the entanglements you’ve witnessed and been part of. The vines you’ve
snapped, tapestries you’ve been twisted in. TANGLE can be intimacy or unravelling. Let us
know where it has taken you.

Send us 1-2 poems you’d like us to read. Poems that decide to play with or move outside of the theme are also welcomed, we just want to be part of your web—send us poetry you’re excited to share.

We accept submissions from disabled, D/deaf, and chronically ill creators working in so-called Australia, but your writing doesn’t have to relate to disability or your personal identity.

If you’d like to review our TANGLE issue theme/prompt in Plain Language, please click here.

Submissions close at midnight (12am AEST) on Wednesday May 1, 2024. Please email your poems to sunderjournal@gmail.com

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

General guidelines:

Sunder is a poetry journal first and foremost, therefore we only accept submissions of poetry at this time. Having said that, we accept poetry in whatever form you make it — if you want to send us a voice memo or an extravagantly-formatted PDF, we can’t wait to see it.

We only publish poetry made by people who identify as D/deaf, disabled, or chronically ill. Your work doesn’t have to be about these things, but should be informed by lived experience of disability/illness.

We believe in the social model of disability— our community have diverse lived experiences to share, and all experiences/disabilities/illnesses are welcome. If you have any questions about whether Sunder is the place for your work, get in touch.

What we don’t care about:

  • font choice (except maybe no Windings, unless it’s a decoding situation)
  • line spacing and margins
  • how you choose to punctuate your work
  • whether you send us a PDF or Word Doc (we can accept PDFs, .doc, .mp3, .mp4, .jpeg, .png and .mov files. If you don’t see the file type you work in here, send us a message and we’ll see what we can do)

What we do care about:

  • whether your work has already been published (simultaneous submissions are ok, but please withdraw your poem(s) if they’re published before we get to them)
  • you identify as D/deaf, disabled, or chronically ill
  • your work does not contain any content that is racist, homophobic, transphobic, sex-worker phobic, promotes violence or the stigmatisation of marginalised peoples.
  • you live in so-called ‘Australia’

Payment:

We pay $150 per poem/piece published on the website.
